Seven reasons why Postgrad Clin Ed delivers standard

THE Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education course being presented by HC Skills with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow this week complies with the highest medical professional standards.

It maps directly to guidance for commissioners and providers of postgraduate medical education referenced by the General Medical Council via the Framework for the Professional Development of Postgraduate Medical Supervisors.

The GMC’s Generic Standards for Training require that trainers with additional designated educational roles must demonstrate ability as effective trainers.

There are increasing calls for the accreditation and professional development of supervisors in postgraduate medical education.

However, there has been little guidance on the competencies or training required of postgraduate medical supervisors and in March 2009, the Academy of Medical Educators was commissioned by UK Departments of Health to help define training requirements.

The Academy is a multi-professional body that promotes the advancement of medical education for the public benefit in particular by:

  • The development of a curriculum and qualification system
  • Undertaking research for the continuing development of professional medical education
  • The promotion and dissemination of best practice in medical education

The work of the academy involved extensive research, wide-ranging stakeholder engagement and a close working relationship with the GMC and the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board – two bodies who have since merged.

The framework is designed around seven key areas of activity, all of which relate to the role of the postgraduate medical supervisor and all of which underpin the HC Skills qualification.

They are:

  1. Ensuring safe and effective patient care through training
  2. Establishing and maintaining an environment for learning
  3. Teaching and facilitating learning
  4. Enhancing learning through assessment 
  5. Supporting and monitoring educational progress
  6. Guiding personal and professional development
  7. Continuing professional development as an educator

The teaching unit develops the knowledge and skills relevant to teaching and learning processes and establishes the set of professional competencies necessary to deliver structured, measured and effective teaching strategies.

The programme identifies and assesses lecturing skills and the specific requirements for teaching clinical skills and is delivered through formal presentations, structured delegate participation and clinical skills sessions administered and facilitated by clinical educators with the defining experience and qualifications.
