HC Skills postgraduate Clinical Education, Golden Jubilee Hospital Innovation Centre

HC Skills International are marking 10 years of delivering a professional teaching course to medics by staging an updated version of the programme at a new venue.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education  – tailored for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals including the medical device industry – will be presented at the Golden Jubilee Innovation Centre in Clydebank on October 11 and 12, 2016.

The course equips delegates – who have a responsibility for training colleagues within their professional remit – with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to deliver structured, measured and effective teaching strategies.

To date, it has been delivered to more than 1,000 people at various venues across the United Kingdom and Europe since 2007.

The course will also be presented at Churchill College, Cambridge, and Leeds Beckett University on dates to be revealed at the end of October, to coincide with the start of the new academic year.

The qualification – issued by Eduqual – maps directly to guidance for postgraduate medical education referenced by the General Medical Council via the Framework for the Professional Development of Postgraduate Medical Supervisors. The GMC’s Generic Standards for Training require that doctors with additional designated educational roles must demonstrate ability as effective trainers.

It is delivered through formal presentations, structured delegate participation and clinical skills sessions administered and facilitated by clinical educators with the defining experience and qualifications.

The key elements formally assessed are:

• Education theory

• Effective lecturing/presentation skills

• Ability to instruct participants to teach effectively

• Teaching a clinical skill

• Education session plan

• The art of critique and appraisal

The course utilises blended learning techniques, including an online pre-course component, a two-day classroom-based practical session and a post-course online written assessment. It enables delegates to improve their ability to present, instruct and demonstrate clinical/technical skills to others.

Previous presentations of the course have received high praise from medical professionals who have attended.

Read some of the testimonials:

  • “The course included excellent practical experience of structuring micro-teaching sessions effectively.”
  • “The most significant things I learned were teaching methods, micro-teaching and mannerisms.”
  • “I will do so many things differently as a result of this course; as a result, I will be much clearer in my presentational structuring.”
  • “This is a VERY useful course, and very enjoyable. A good mixture between practical and listening.”

HC Skills director Diane Irvine said: “This is the same course we have been staging for the last 10 years – it’s just it has had a minor makeover with some new content; and it does not adversely affect those who have achieved the postgrad qualification with us in the past.

“We have taken more than 1,000 medical personnel down through the years and given them the skills needed to be effective trainers/teachers within their professional remit.

“The fact that this is still proving to be a hugely popular course is testament to the HC Skills team who present it at various venues across the UK.

“They have the defining knowledge and experience to add this additional key element to the medical professional’s armoury.”
