It started with a simple observation, in a small office at Health Care International Hospital (HCI, now the Golden Jubilee Hospital). Medical device companies were revolutionising patient care with technical product innovations, yet their skilled representatives entering operating theatres and critical care areas lacked formal recognition by hospital staff of their competencies and expertise. They were essentially non-contracted, non-qualified third parties present in some of the most critical and highly risk-managed spaces in hospitals.
The solution seemed obvious: these professionals needed externally validated skills, confidence, and competence to excel where it mattered most—in patient-facing and critical care areas. From this spark, Healthcare Skills Training International was born. One course. One mission.
Medical device companies make substantial investments developing their representatives into expert product specialists. We appreciated this training achieved exceptionally high standards and that it merited formal qualification status—equivalent to professional frameworks hospitals used for their own clinical staff—genuinely worthy of National Occupational Standard designation.
For 25 years, Healthcare Skills Training International has proudly delivered SQA-governed Theatre Access qualifications benchmarked to National Occupational Standards. These credentials carry legal substance because medical devices directly impact patient lives and safety. While various training options exist and we don’t own these regulatory standards, we’ve chosen to maintain full compliance, working with faculty including practicing lawyers and clinicians who bring real-world expertise.
When patient safety is involved, rigorous standards benefit everyon; learners, healthcare institutions, and ultimately patients. Our focus remains on delivering the highest quality education that meets employers’ vicarious liability, regulatory requirements, and serves the healthcare community’s needs for qualified, competent professionals.
The historic breakthrough came in 2002. For the first time in the medical devices industry, there was an accredited professional training standard: The BTEC Professional Award in Access to Operating Theatres.
This triumph brought together the National Association of Theatre Nurses, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow, the European Operating Room Nurses Association, and the Association of British Health-Care Industries.
Dr. David Jefferys, Chief Executive of the then Medical Devices Agency, declared: “The first National Training Standard for the Medical Devices Industry is a timely and important initiative which we strongly support.”
Internationally recognised Laparoscopic Surgeon Graham Bell said: “This new qualification sets a competence standard for the Medical Devices Industry… their presence in the operating theatre will not compromise patient safety.” He concluded prophetically: “This is the solution to a problem most people don’t realise exists.”
Success opened doors we never imagined. We listened to our learners about their challenges and real-world struggles, and responded accordingly, expanding our training with Clinical Education, Leadership development, Human Factors & Neuroscience, and Medical Device Regulations.
Soon Healthcare Skills Training International were creating professionally validated specialist Diplomas for other organisations too across Medical Gases, Endoscopy, Orthopaedics, Orthodontics, and Ophthalmics—each reflecting our commitment to practical, expertly delivered education shaped by healthcare realities.
We never aspired for us to be the biggest training organisation. Instead, our focus was on making us the most responsive, the most rigorous, and the most relevant to real-world healthcare. We understood our audience because we were our audience—building training designed by healthcare professionals, for healthcare professionals, ensuring every learning objective translated into improved patient care, professional competence, and commercial success.
Twenty-five years later, our greatest pride isn’t just what we built—it’s who we built it with. Every delegate, all of our exceptional faculty, and our partners from NHS, industry and the private sector became the foundation of our success. Healthcare Skills Training International was never just about training—it was about creating community.
As we celebrate our 25th anniversary this October, our commitment remains unchanged: staying ahead of healthcare’s rapid evolution and keeping our training relevant, rigorous, and transformative.
Twenty-five years ago, we set out to solve a problem many didn’t realise existed. Today, we continue that mission with the same passion and unwavering focus on improving patient care through professional education.
